Serial is a full-length crime drama broadcast on the public radio station WBEZ in Chicago, Illinois. Created by Starlee Kine, it follows the story of an MIT student named Sarah Koenig who begins investigating the remains of a murdered teenager while working at an investigative journalism podcast. The show aired its first season in 2014 and debuted to critical acclaim. In 2015, the series was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards and four Peabody Awards. It received widespread media coverage from publications such as Forbes, Rolling Stone, USA Today and The New York Times News Service. It also gained strong online reaction from audiences who hailed Kine's innovative storytelling methods which NPR called "a new kind of audio drama. It's part documentary, part serialized mystery, and entirely addicting." A second season of the show premiered in 2015. The show returned for a third season (broadcast as Season 2) in 2016. In 2014, Starlee Kine was approached by WBEZ Chicago public radio station with the idea for a new podcast. Kine had previously created and hosted "Song Exploder", a podcast where musicians discuss how they made their songs. A big part of her idea was to bring people into the process of creating something and develop empathy for artists and artisans through bearing witness to what they do. She had found this process of creating and documenting art inspiring and wanted to create something like this on a larger scale. Kine had been interested in podcasts for a while and felt that they were too often overly serious; she wanted to create something more light-hearted. She has said that the idea for Serial came from "Song Exploder" but with a different type of podcast, saying "I was kind of struck by how much I enjoyed being a fly on the wall in somebody else's process, hearing about it as it unfolded." Kine began working on Serial during her free time from her then day job at This American Life. She worked on the show when she was not working at This American Life. It took her roughly three months to produce the initial 27-episode series. As the show gained popularity, WBEZ offered Kine more time to work on Serial. She said that she struggled with this decision because it meant she would have to cut the other podcasts she was working on, but did so in order to focus on Serial. Kine also did not think Serial would take so long because of its high production value compared to other podcasts, saying "I just think that there's a history of people taking longer than they should." The first season was released in 2014 and debuted at number 21 on the iTunes podcast charts. Kine said that many people assumed that Serial was popular because Sarah Koenig was also the host of "This American Life", but she said she did not believe this to be true. The show follows the story of Sarah Koenig, an editor at "This American Life" in New York City. One day, while visiting her brother in Baltimore, Maryland, he asks if she could look into the case of Hae Min Lee, a teenager who was found murdered in 1999. He tells her it is because he feels like there wasn't enough evidence for Adnan Syed to be found guilty for the crime. cfa1e77820
